What your water heater is telling you
The symptoms people call about, and what each one usually means:
- No hot water. The heater isn't heating — on a gas tank that's often the pilot, burner or gas control; on an electric one, an element or thermostat.
- Leaking. A drip from a fitting, connector or valve is usually a repair. Water coming from the tank itself means the tank is done.
- Rumbling or popping. Sediment settled in the bottom of the tank, with water trapped under it boiling as the heater fires.
- Pilot won't stay lit. Often the small part that senses the flame, or dirt or a draft at the burner — usually a repair, not a new heater.
- Rusty hot water. If only the hot side runs brown, the tank is the suspect. If the cold does too, look at the pipes instead.
- Running out of hot water fast. Sediment taking up room, a broken dip tube mixing cold into the hot, or a heater that's too small for the house now.

A leaking tank can't — once the tank itself is leaking, the answer is a new water heater, and we'll say so plainly. Where either answer is reasonable, you get both prices and make the call.
